![]() ![]() I remember growing up that “The Wizard of Oz” always aired at Easter. I can at least give stations a pass for playing winter-but-not-Christmas songs (like Sleigh Ride, Winter Wonderland, Baby it’s Cold Outside, Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, etc.) At least they are associated with the *season* in which Chirstmas takes place (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway.)Īs for the idea that “My Favorite Things” is a Christmas song because “The Sound of Music” used to be broadcast around Christmas time…. So it’s not even a winter song, let alone a Christmas song! In short, it’s a Christmas song because someone decided to put it on a Christmas album to promote it.Īnd, like you, I cannot stand hearing this song played incessantly on Christmas radio!! Sure, it has a *few* mentions of generic winter imagery, but they are balanced by just as much summer or seasonless imagery. It seems from the article, they may have even changed a lyric to add in the “sleigh bells”? But I can’t find confirmation on that. The label was currently making a Christmas record with one artist, so they had him put on this song from the movie. They asked a label to have an artist record a song from the movie. #Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens movieIt seems the movie-makers wanted a hit single to help promote movie ticket sales. I have no other problems with Christmas music, and I enjoy “My Favorite Things” very much when it is presented in the proper capacity. So why did this happen? When did this summertime showtune become someone’s idea of a Christmas song? This has been one of my major pet peeves for a while now, and I still end up hearing it on holiday radio stations when they pop up after Thanksgiving. And none of their least favorite things have to do with Christmas, except maybe “when I’m feeling sad” for those with seasonal depression. I guess a few of the things actually could relate to winter holidays (warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages, sleigh bells, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes) but the large majority don’t have anything to do with that at all (raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, cream-colored ponies, doorbells, wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings, etc). It lists things that make them happy to make them feel better about things that make them not so happy. ![]() In the musical, the song serves to cheer up the children who are scared of the summer thunderstorm that woke them up in the middle of the night. ![]() I wasn’t sure what to write today’s blog about, so I figured I’ll go with something random.ĭoes it bother anyone else that “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music somehow became a Christmas song at some point? Who decided that should happen?! ![]()
